Very interesting narrativization of the shock encounter between a stereotypical Spanish family spending a day at the beach and a “black man” who has just reached the shore on an illegal boat, and who speaks no Spanish (and whom everybody refers to as "el negro" throughout the film) . Although the film is mostly dramatic (with a tragic ending, in fact), a certain amount of humour emerges from situations that put the Spanish family in the spot. This film, directed by one of Spain’s major filmmakers, caused controversy both in Spain and abroad, above all because of its very grim ending.
